Program Overview

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and other Mental and Behavioral conditions are being treated in various ways throughout the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), Veterans Administration (VA) and civilian health care systems. This online training is designed to equip Allied Health Team members with the skills necessary for the standard and consistent application of culturally competent methodologies when treating military service members, veterans and their families.

Our goal is to empower you with the tools to understand the importance of military and veteran culture, cultural competency, and effectively communicating with service members, Veterans, and their family members who are living with PTSD, TBI, other mental, behavioral, and physical health concerns. Learn how to master these unique clinical situations by exploring the differences in military service, military culture, rank, veterans, gender issues, age, values and beliefs, socio-economics, race, ethnicity and religion.

Target Audience
Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Nurses. Other health care professionals such as Social Workers, Psychologist, Chaplains, Behavioral Health Professions, and Executive Healthcare Leaders may benefit from the content of this program and will be provided with a certificate of participation.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:

Module 1: Military and Veteran Culture in the Clinical Setting 
1. Contrast explicit and implicit characteristics of military and veteran culture
2. State relevancy of cultural competency communication training for patient provider interactions

3. List barriers to patient-provider communication
4. Identify how military and veteran cultural considerations impact patient-provider interaction
 
Module 2: Cultural Competency in the Military and Veteran Communities
5. Contrast explicit and implicit characteristics of military and veteran culture
6. State relevancy of cultural competency communication training for patient provider interactions
7. List barriers to patient-provider communication
 
Clinical Workshop: Neurobiology of PTSD and TBI
8. Discuss deployment dysfunction
9. Demonstrate Define PTSD and TBI
10. Discuss the following PTSD topics
  • Evolution of the DSM and PTSD
  • PTSD biology and symptomatology
11. Discuss the following TBI topics
  • TBI classification, etiology, and pathology
  • Physiologic and biochemical tissue changes
12. List areas of neuropsychological assessment
13. Discuss pharmaceutical and therapeutic interventions

Module 3: Patient and Provider Communication in the Military and Veteran Communities
14. Identify personal cultural biases and beliefs & how they impact communication skills
12. Discuss and execute communication strategies that enhance targeted outcomes
16. Integrate cultural communication strategies into clinical practice and into the provision of supportive services

Training Structure

To successfully navigate the training and receive up to five (5) CME/CE credits, complete the following in the order they are listed. Each of these has its own tab at the top of this training.

1. Pre-assessment
Take the pre-assessment to log your current understanding of the training material. You will not be graded or evaluated on your responses.

2. Activity Material
Watch and review the four Learning Modules, which focus on different aspects of the Warrior-Centric Healthcare Training. Each module contains an introduction and conclusion video, lecture videos, and supplemental videos on the specific module topic. You need to complete all four modules in order to take and pass the post-assessment.

3. Post-assessment
You must take and pass the post-assessment with a 70% or higher within three attempts to receive four (4) credits for this training.

4. Evaluation
Take the short, anonymous and voluntary training evaluation to provide us with the feedback needed to make this training better in the future.

5. Certificate
Once you've completed the post-assessment, you will be awarded four (4) credits and can print the certificate for your own records.

6. Case Studies
You will have the opportunity to receive one (1) additional CME credit by participating in two Case Study activities 3 months after passing this assessment. You will receive a follow-up email in 3 months with the link to the Case Studies.

Method of Participation
To receive CME/CE credits/contact hours, you must:

  • Review the full content of the program.
  • Successfully complete the post-test (70% or higher).
  • You will have 3 opportunities to successfully complete the program.

Your statement of credit will be issued immediately upon successful completion of the test and submission of the evaluation form.

Note: Case Studies
You will have the opportunity to receive one (1) additional CME credit/contact hour by participating in two case study activities 3 months after passing this assessment. You will receive a follow-up email in 3 months with the link to the Case Studies.
